Harry Hariyanto joined us on a 3 Day trip.
Here is a brief run-down of the trip.
We fished both Innisfail and Port Douglas over the 3 days.
Day 1: Training Day
Was tough going we went out at Innisfail, interest from the fish was few and far between, it didn't help that the weather-man had got the forecast seriously wrong.
"How is it that being a meteoroligist is the only occupation in the world where it is ok to get it wrong"?
Anyhow I digress, we went through training day and Harry improved immensely; we worked hard on technique, especially casting accuracy.
With not alot to show for our efforts we headed home, with the plan for a change of location for day 2.
Day 2: Pulled Hooks and Bite Offs
We headed out of Port Douglas bright and early, ensuring a smooth ride to the fishing grounds. We arrived and the tide was running strong. There were patches of fusiliers scattered along the reef edge and things looked promising. After a quick pep talk we got Harry casting at a patch of fusies and it wasn't long till the GTs made their presence known. Harry was now on the steep learning curve of GT popping. Here is his first real encounter with a GT, even if it was only brief.
This event set the tone for the rest of the day Harry had trouble hooking up on many occasions his popping technique was excellent, his popper bit the water well and made plenty of noise;he kept his line tight when needed during his retrieve so that when he did get a strike he didn't have excessive slack to contend with. He also got plenty of attention from Spanish Mackerel, unfortunately they all ended up in being bitten off shortly after hook up.
I can only summise, sometimes that's just how it rolls.
Eventually Little H got to stick the hooks on a nice little GT plucked of a fusilier packed bommie. High 5's all round and we headed for home.
Day 3: Retribution
Our location was the Port Douglas area again and the trip out showed plenty of promise, there were flocks of birds and schools of bait and small tuna everywhere. The weather was calm and our run out to the grounds was effortless. Today had the strongest tides of the trip, run out tide till 11:30 with a drop of about a metre. I was expecting a good morning.
We discussed the events of the past 2 days and Harry was feeling confident; He said to me
"today the fish get payback"
It didn't take long, the first shoal had a good showing of bait and plenty of current flowing over it. Harry sent a cast out and in just a few pops he was hooked up solid.
Here's a look at some of Little H's payback.
By the end of his 3 Days Harry who'd become known as "Little H" had racked up quite a few nice fish. His fishing horizons had expanded and he is keen to continue his pursuit of that 40+ kg GT.
We look forward to seeing you again "Little H"
